is derived from the words photo, meaning light
– and voltaic, meaning energy. When
you combine these two together, you get an
amazing piece of equipment that can literally
‘collect’ the rays of the sun
and convert it to electrical energy. When
the rays of the sun hit the solar panels or
photovoltaic cells, they act as a battery
to produce current that can be sent directly
to the power supply connected with the equipment.
Since the energy supplied by the photovoltaic
cells come in DC or direct current form, an
inverter is needed so that DC can be converted
to AC or alternating current – which
is needed to power up light fixtures, heaters
and other electrical appliances. In most systems,
there is an electrical distribution panel
which allows the electricity produced by the
solar panels to be combined with the typical
power supply provided by utility companies.
